On June 8th, 2024, the Yaaku community in the Mukogodo Forest, Doldol, Laikipia North, hosted a momentous cultural worship event that brought together indigenous groups and organizations committed to the regeneration of the endangered Yiakunte language. This inspiring gathering marked a significant milestone in the revitalization of the Yaaku people’s heritage.
The event, held at the Yaaku Cultural Center of Hope, celebrated the successful translation of the Gospel of St. Luke into Yiakunte, a symbol of both faith and cultural restoration. It was attended by key players, including the Hunter Gatherer Forum Kenya (HUGAFO-K), Oasis Community Network, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, and community representatives from various regions. The Yaaku women-led group, Indigenous Young Moms, played a crucial role in hosting the event and showcasing their ongoing projects, such as beekeeping and eco-friendly construction.
As the Yaaku language faces the threat of extinction, this event was a testament to the community’s dedication to regenerating their linguistic and cultural roots. By intertwining faith, tradition, and modern initiatives, the Yaaku community demonstrated resilience and a renewed commitment to preserving their identity for future generations.
This celebration of regeneration and restoration not only honored the past but also paved the way for a future where the Yaaku culture and language continue to thrive
