Who we are

Hunter – Gatherers Forum Kenya (HUGAFO – K) is a network of members drawn from the various hunter and gatherer communities (HGs) in Kenya. Member communities of HUGAFO –K include the Ogiek of Mt. Elgon, Ogiek of Mau, Waayu, Sengwer, Sanye as well as the Yaiku community. The forum seeks to provide a platform through which HGs can communicate, document and share their vast experiences to foster understanding, collaboration and solidarity, offering a united voice in national matters concerning HGs in Kenya.

Communities

Ogiek Of Mau

The Ogiek of Mau occupy the Mau Forest Complex which includes East Mau and South West Mau (Nakuru County), (Maasai Mau) Narok, Baringo, (Koibatek) Kericho, Uasin Gishu and Nandi.

Wayyu Community

The Wayyu Community live in Northern Kenya and Coastal Region and occupy 9 counties including Marsabit, Isiolo, Tana River, Mandera, Garrisa, Lamu, Kilifi, Taita Taveta and Kwale

Ogiek Of Mt Elgon

The Ogiek of Mt. Elgon community are located in Chepkitale, Mt. Elgon. Some members of the community are also found in Chebuk, Matumbui and Endebes wards in Bungoma county.

Aweer Community

The Aweer are found between Dodori and Boni reserves in Lamu County. The areas where the Aweer occupy boast of indigenous, open canopy coastal forest and host a diverse range of vegetation,...

Sengwer Community

The Sengwer are found in Embobut Forest (Elgeyo Marakwet County) and are also found in other counties including, Trans Nzoia and West Pokot along Cherengani Hills.

Yiaku Community

The Yiaku are a Cushitic tribe that traces its origin from Ethiopia and dwells in Mukogodo Forest of Laikipia County. They have a population of not less than 6000 people.
