Community Profile

The El Molo people are one of the smallest communities in Kenya, which according to the 2019 census, consisted of 1,400 individuals. They are found in the southeastern shores of Lake Turkana in Marsabit County, northern Kenya. They reside in Komote, Layeni, Algasan, Palo, Soti and Loiyangalani. Often referred to as the "Gurapau" – translating to "People of Water", the El-molo people have an extensive history intertwined with the lands surrounding Lake Turkana which have sustained their distinctive culture and livelihoods for centuries. As indigenous custodians of their customary lands and waters, the El-molo people have developed sophisticated indigenous knowledge, innovations and practices through generations of habitation in the Turkana habitat.
